When you foster it’s often those little things you do that makes all the difference to the young person in front of you. Welcoming a new child into your household and into your heart is no easy task. We have been intrigued to find out about those little things our foster carers do in order to prepare their home for when a new child or young person arrives.
First there is the preparation and making that young person feel welcome as one of our fostering families told us…
What a lovely way of welcoming a young person into the home and helping them to feel like they belong.
Here at FosterCare UK we are huge advocates of the notion that fostering is a family affair and that the children already living in the household should be involved in the fostering process, which is why we love this tip from another of our fostering families.
This is such a great idea as the foster daughter will be great at putting herself in the shoes of the new child, and peer to per reassurance is a great way of helping the new child feel welcome. We also love their ritual of buying new pj’s for every new young person that comes to stay. Often, looked after children, can arrive with little to call their own. This gives them something that is just theirs from the get-go.
