Here at FosterCare UK we know that outstanding foster carers come from all walks of life with a variety of backgrounds. However, we also know that those from a teaching background are also more likely to foster. Why is that?
Perhaps the most obvious point is that teachers have already made a career which revolves around children. The passion for the wellbeing of young people is already there, they want to make a difference, to help others learn, grow and be the best they can be.
A common frustration we hear from teachers and former teachers is their limited time with the children in their class. For many teachers, they witness how school is the only safe space for some of their pupils and they dedicate their time to ensuring that, while in their classroom, the children have the best experience possible. Then the school year ends, and the teachers are left wondering what happened to that child. They make all the difference they can, in the time they can, but by fostering they can enjoy seeing the long-term benefits to the child.
Fostering is vastly different to parenting. You’ve known your own children since they were babies, fostering is different, your foster children will come with their own thoughts and experiences. As foster carers, we don’t want to change children, we want to help them feel more confident in who they are and prove to them that adults can be trusted. A curious nature is key to this, teachers love to look for the why, to see beneath the surface of a situation and root out what is really happening.
It’s no secret that being a teacher is a tough profession, more of a calling than a job. Think of fostering in the same vein, it’s previously been stated that fostering is more of a way of life than a job.
These attributes are not exclusive to teachers, so if you feel like you tick these boxes then we would love to hear from you.
