Therapeutic fostering is a specialist type of foster care that is tailored to support children and young people who have dealt with trauma, abuse or any other kind of severe disruption prior to being placed into foster care. These children may have trouble forming meaningful and trusting relationships with other people or have other behavioural or emotional issues.
Could you become a foster carer and provide such an essential service to children and young people in your area? If so FosterCare UK would love to hear from you – especially if you’re interested in offering specialist fostering services.
In the past, when children and young people with complex needs have been removed from their families and placed into care, there has been a reliance on government-run Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services to provide all-important emotional and mental health assessments and treatment. With the availability of such services declining in recent years, however, both local authorities and independent foster care agencies have looked to other options to help children and young people develop in a positive way.
At FosterCare UK, it is incredibly important to us that any child or young person that we have placed succeed. To achieve this goal we take a proactive approach to foster care and provide both our placements and our registered carers with strong support networks and services, including, where required, responsive psychological and clinical therapy care.
We have created our own specialist Multi-Disciplinary Assessment & Treatment Team so that we can continue providing such support to our team and children and young people in our care. This fostering service is led by an experienced consultant Child & Adolescent Psychotherapist and consists of highly qualified and skilled professionals with resumes that include the aforementioned CAMHS and the NHS as well as the educational and private sectors.
If you’re thinking of fostering and want to make a real difference in the lives of children and young people in great need of a loving family and a safe home environment, then we urge you to consider becoming a therapeutic foster care provider. As a specialist foster carer, you’ll receive extensive training and support to ensure you can learn all the skills you need to aid in the development of a child and young person. All carers will also receive support from their assigned social worker. As therapeutic foster care is a specialist fostering service, any carers providing this service will be eligible to receive a higher than usual fostering allowance.
